This is for Ian, but I did reply to Jun Qian's post. Ill pop in on this - I
too have had such behavior with the mouse, and unfortunately also don't
remember what it was that fixed it. It was not a hardware problem, but
drivers. Check your video driver in particular. Have you tried booting in
safe mode to see if the mouse behaves the same.

To Jun Qian: we both need to record how we solve problems so that we may
remember how to fix future instances :)

I'm not sure what happened, but I did see similar problem (no virus as
well).  I couldn't remember what was it, but I certainly sure it was some
software.  Did you try to remove everything but only leave the very basic in
msconfig, and called up Ctrl-Alt-Del to end all but the two basic process?
If there is some sort of mouse ware or keyboard software installed, remove
them straight away, they cause nothing by problems.
