There is a limit to the shelf life of the dye layer that stores
information in a writable or re-writable optical disc. Re-writable discs
are more vulnerable to this because of their design nature. Great swings
in temperature accelerate the dye's degradation. For permanent archival,
there are specifically designed write-once discs that will preserve
information for about 100 years when stored away from light and heat.

Several years ago, I purchased 25 Memorex DVD+RW discs. Now two of them
have
failed. They were written on and had been sitting on the shelf for some
time. When I put one of them into my DVD drive, it locks up the
computer.
The other disc simply sites there without being recognized. I can't even
erase them.

 

I would like to know if this is a common occurrence? The lesson to me is
that you can't rely on the DVD+RW for safe keeping of your important
data!
