IDE cable doesn't carry power (without power, harddisk won't operate), I
don't see any reason why this method would damage your harddisk. I've used
this method all the time whenever I need to. I may change another removable
kit if I were you, I feel there is something wrong with it.

However I could be wrong, I always hope someone can correct my mistake as
straight as possible, that will help me on my technical skills/knowledge.
