Check to make sure that you don't have the cable turned the wrong way at one
end or the other.  It is sometimes hard to make sure that you get pin one on
the motherboard and pin one on the drive lined up with the side of the
ribbon with the red marking, because many floppies aren't really "keyed" in
any fashion and they don't mark on the connector where pin one is (or at
least it is hard to see).  The usual rule of thumb that pin one is on the
side closest to the power connector doesn't always apply to floppies.
