I tried everything I could think of to rescue the drive, including putting it back in the external case, and even installed it as a slave in a second computer.  Neither computer recognnized the drive at all, so there was no hope of copying files to the primary drive.  Although it showed up in BIOS as a working drive.  Another PB-Build contributor provided me with a copy of a recovery program by the Partition Magic people.  I'll give it a try.  Thanks for your suggestions.
