There is a virus that does exactly that- it kills the CD-ROM drive to
prevent you from running antivirus software from a bootable CD. I worked
for Symantec and supported Norton Antivirus briefly, so I know this to be a
possibility- I can't remember the name of the virus though.

If I were you, I'd try running a virus scan first, and if you find your
virus scanner to be disabled, it'll clinch it.

This is not to say that you definitely have a virus, but I would eliminate
that possibility before I started reinstalling the OS or changing out the
hardware.

By the way, did you recently run an attachment of some sort that you
received in your email? This is the primary way that people get viruses
these days.
