I've observed this sort of problem with older computers running Windows 98.
So far, my best results were achieved by disabling APM (Advanced Power
Management) in the computer BIOS.  From what I've read, early computer's APM
code weren't quite up to snuff.  One result you may not like, is that Win98
will not power off the PC when you shut down, you get the OK to turn off PC
message instead.  An alternative to disabling APM altogether, is to disable
the various power off timers and see what happens.

I have an older PC, that I'm trying to get working properly for a young
friend.
Whenever the screen saver comes on for a long period of time, the monitor
goes black and the
sytem locks up. I have a 233MHZ processor. 64MB ram/ 4gig free on my HD.
I've recently had 96mB ram, but removed 32, to see if the problem is being
caused by bad memory.
I'm running Win98. I've swapped diff Screen savers and still the same
results.
I also put in a new Video card.
Any one have any ideas.
