This turned out to be a bad port .The AGP card I installed is very close to
LPT1 on the board, and I assume I erred somewhere. I have installed a new
port and all is well now. For what it's worth, Canon tech support was very
helpful, correct and speedy.

Hi Hugh:

For what it might be worth I had the same scenario
with a P200MMX and an Epson 600 printer and Easy photo
smart page pro scanner daisy chained on the printer port.
In my case Epson had me go into a file and place a
semi-colon ahead of the file and the *Out of Paper* problem
went away.

Later Epson updated drivers for the 600s and I no
longer needed the semi-colon fix.

If I had to do it over again I would likely just keep
the printer full of paper and forget it until I noticed
new drivers showing up from Epson.
