I have the Epson 1520 and the 700 which have never reported the ink levels correctly even with a new cartridge, especially the color ink cartridges.  I have taken out and replaced the color ink cartridge once to print at least 50 more pages before the cartridge actually runs out.  The 870 actually reports the ink level correctly and I have not needed to take out and replace the same cartridge to use up the ink.
