The screen is completely blank.  There is no activity after the initial boot.  I will try the boot disk (I can't remember if I tried that already, but I will try again.)   I'll let you know.  Thanks.

in a desktop there is no other battery except that which powers the CMOS chipset. this is 3 volts. having said this, and also " battery low 2.26 volts" seems logical to assume that this is the case. BUT GENERALLY in such cases you get a "CMOS CHECKSUM ERROR.. DEFAULTS LOADED.. PL ENTER BIOS..ETC ETC. and your system clock will not show the correct time. but the exact wording of the error msg. depends on the bios name/revision no.

i do not see why changing the cpu speed to "manual" should result in boot failure.

so if you remeber the bios name/ revision it will help if you post back..are you getting any "post" msg? ,beeps, or simply a blank screen? if you have a boot floppy try booting from that. BTW what is your operating system?
