Go to my computer/control panel/multimedia and in the "multi media properties" dialog box under heading " audio"  you will find a box at the bottom reading " show volume control in task bar " . put a tick mark in the box and you will get the speaker icon in the system tray. right click and access it and ensure all settings are as you wish. also ensure that your " line in/ line out/ for speakers, microphone, headphone are all properly connected.
