Strange as it may seem, I have recently experienced the same thing with
one of my PC's. Actually today! Almost
identical symptoms as Mr. Carmichael reported below. (1/10/00) It too
was running an IBM Deskstar (10.1 GB). & a Celeron 300A
WIN98 2nd.

Finally locked-up completely today wouldn't even accept a Start- UP
diskette.

After seeing his post, I suspect a "virus" but I ran a check last night
& found none before the final curtain fell.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

His message read as follows:

I recently install an IBM Deskstar 13.5GB drive into a PII 400 system.
Days
after install I would get the dreaded blue screen even when system was
idle
(the error msg escapes me at the moment). This weekend I found myself
unceremoniously dumped to DOS with a "windows protection error" message
and
a prompt to reboot. Upon reboot I was greeted with the following:

"Invalid dynamic link call from VFAT(01) + 0000B970 to device "EC83",
service 205B. Windows configuration invalid. Run setup"

Then a suggestion that if I press "y" to continue boot then system "may
become unstable". Moot point since from that moment I'vew been unable
to
enter Windows. I was able to get into DOS, but after a few moments or
rooting around the drive, system locked up in the middle of a directory
listing ("curent directory is......"SNAP).
