Problemed one!

     I have encountered the same problem installing a USB printer.  The best
way to a cost free test would be to try removing all of the installed
drivers including everything else that as installed during the process. like
software, drivers, etc...  After doing so, since WinXP will auto detect
newly installe devices.  Let winXP intall, just until the point where it
tells you to locate a driver.  At that point, you might want to do
everything manual.  Try looking for the driver yourself and installing from
there.  This way, it allows you to choose from a list of compatible
components, with the device driver.
     If this does not work, try going to the manufacturers website and
download the newest driver they have posted.
     Like someone had posted earlier, try checking your device driver
settings, to see if any devices might be disabled or unavailable, like USB
root hub or something.
