I've been following this thread, and I just ordered a Dell Inspiron E1505.
When I first got it, the same dim display was noticed and when plugged in,
nice and bright. On mine, to the right of the left Ctrl key is a "Fn" button
with blue letters. When pressed the display brightness can be adjusted with
the up/down arrow keys. Perhaps Gateway has the same ability. Now I can see
the display even on battery power in bright daylight. This is helpful since
I use it solely for the purpose of media source for a rather hefty DJ
service.
