Denis,

I recently went through this process on a DIY project. My dilemma was that
I wanted to install XP first, and at a later date install LINUX as a 2nd OS.
I finally decided on the following strategy: Primary partition -8 GB for XP
(Pro), Extended partition - 31 GB for application programs and data, 31 for
"family" stuff, games, pictures etc., and 5 GB unallocated for the future
LINUX installation. I've installed, Office, Picture It!, Encarta, some
investment software and still have lots of empty space:^) I also chose a
WD 80 GB, with the 8 MB cache option.

BTW I chose to use FAT 32 as the format since folks told me LINUX will have
trouble with NTFS files, otherwise I think I would have gone with MS's
recommendation for NTFS. If you choose FAT 32 you will have to select the
cluster size BEFORE you select the file type when formatting. The menu
starts with the default value which forces the NTFS choice.

Subject: [PCBUILD] Partitioning Stategy for WinXP

> I am about to add a Western Digital 80gb HDD to my system and I am
planning to install WinXP on the new drive. I am running Win 98SE on the
present drive.

where to put the OS, programs, data etc. Is it an advantage to keep the
programs separate from the OS and the data files, for instance ?

strategy of using such a big drive efficiently that I am unsure of.
