I just got an Epson 1240U Photo scanner yesterday and have been trying it out
tonight, and so far this is one fast USB scanner. Easy install, no problems,
even includes a transparency adapter w/templates for film work up to 4" x 5,"
and PhotoShop 5.0 LE! The images are very color matched to the original
photo. It features 42 bit color depth and up to 1200 x 2400 DPI resolution.
It also has 3 configurable buttons on the front panel. The only negative I've
seen so far is there is no on off Power Button. Epson recommends you unplug
it after use! (It does go into standby mode after 15 minutes of no activity.)
It can be purchased for about $230.00 if you look. I've seen cheaper
scanners, but not with these features. I also have a SCSI based Fujitsu
ScanPartner 15c, which is a color capable 15 page/minute "document" scanner.
It has an auto document feeder for speed, but it is definitely not a good
choice for Photo work.
Good Luck,
Jay Merritt
