To add on to Rick's advice, when I first get a new machine
or install the operating system on a new machine, the
first thing I do is to change the CDROM drive letter to
"Z".  That way the CDROM drive letter will not change as
new drives are added or partitions changed.  All programs
that need the CDROM drive letter for data will then be
installed from "Z:" drive and if CD's with data need to be
loaded for the program to function, the drive letter will
always be the same.
