You need to check your PS/2 mouse.  Check the bottom of the mouse.  If it's a Microsoft mouse it should say "Serial-Mouse Port Compatible"  or "IntelliMouse".  These can be used as either.  OEM mice (like the Compaq mice I get with new computers ordered here) are (most likely) ONLY mouse port (PS/2) mice.

I tried to hook up a serial mouse to a ps/2 port with an adapter and locked up
my whole system.  Couldn't reattach my ps/2 mouse, couldn't use keyboard
controls.  It was a nightmare.  Maybe someone out there can give us both
