Why protect them with a password?
Privacy.
It would be like a lock on your front door...
It keeps out most of the people, most of the time... ;-)

The same reason some of my friends think it is an invasion of privacy
when I run my wife's e-mail account from my computer to warn her
she has un-picked up messages... (And other technical type reasons...)
She has no problem with that, and says she does not care what they think...

Besides, she works with computers and knows e-mail is NOT private
and is bright enough NOT to use e-mail for anything "I" should not see,
<grin>...
