One of the things I would try is delete the Matrox board in device
Manager, shut the system down and restart it and let Windows 98SE
discover it again. I've run into this same situation and I have deleted
the monitor which did not correct the problem but letting Windows
discover the Video card worked.

My suggestion would be to un-install the older version before installing
a newer version. Some of the old components will still be resident and
may cause a version conflict.
