Hey this worked great for me UNTIL I got to the IDE/ATA/ATAPI
controller, (7) on this email. #9 has both grayed out, can you help?

This is FWIW (for what it's worth) post:
I just ran across this tip for speeding up XP boot time. It definitely
works - I've just tried it on a pc running XP Pro, and it cut it's boot
time
to almost 25% of the original.
The reason I researched it is that I had just assembled two identical XP
pc's (identical in hardware and software) and one would boot rapidly
while
the other took over twice as long to get going. Just another little pc
mystery :--))
Here's the tip: (dunno who wrote it but thanks anyway, whoever you are)
Two
points - it's possible it'll only work on XP Pro, and secondly it seems
to
be intended for a pc with one HDD on the primary IDE port, and one or
two
devices on the secondary IDE port. Here's the link:

Note that I've rewritten the original, as I found that it didn't fit
with
what I saw on my screen.

1. Open notepad.exe, type
del c:\windows\prefetch\ntosboot-*.* /q
& save as "ntosboot.bat" in c:\
2. From the Start menu, select "Run..." & type "gpedit.msc".
3. Double click Computer Configuration in the right window.
3a. Still in right pane, double click Windows Settings, ditto Scripts,
ditto
Shutdown.
4. In the new window, click "add", "Browse", locate your "ntosboot.bat"
file
& click "Open".
5. Click "OK", "Apply" & "OK" once again to exit.
6. From the Start menu, select "Run..." & type "devmgmt.msc".
7. Double click on "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers"
8. Right click on "Primary IDE Channel" and select "Properties".
9. Select the "Advanced Settings" tab then on the device 0 or 1 that
doesn't
have 'device type' greyed out, select 'none' instead of 'autodetect' &
click
"OK".
10. Right click on "Secondary IDE channel", select "Properties" and
repeat
step 9.
11. Reboot your computer.
WindowsXP should now boot much faster.

Hope it works for you - it sure worked on the slow booter I described
