Rob,
I have an Epson Stylus 800 Color printer as well and have tried the
replacement black cartridge ordered from the TekWorks website. The
cartridge is in the printer now and I am beginning to notice smudges and
"stray" lines appearing. Tekworks charges $8.95 for the black $10.95 for
the color. I bought one of each to try them out and paid $3.50 for
shipping.

You can buy the Epson cartridges from http://www.buy.com for about the same
price that I paid for these cartridges. Buy.com charges $11.00 for both
black and color genuine Epson cargridges plus shipping. I agree with other
responses to your inquiry that the risk of gumming up the print heads is not
worth the cost savings.
