latter takes longer)
    a... scanreg /fix
  2... boot SAFE MODE twice, the second time find a command prompt, type
SCANREGW
    3... boot to a command line, type WIN at the C: prompt
    4... boot logged.
IN sequence.

a combination of repetition of these steps *may* recover normal booting
