Hello,

I am a relative computer newbie.  I purchased my current computer from a yard
sale about 2-3 years ago and it's been doing good up until 4 days ago.

Now when I try to boot up, I get a black screen  and windows refuses to load.
 If this was a motor, I'd say I can actually 'hear' it stall, and grind to a
halt.

It takes multiple bootings to get windows to finally load and when it begins,
there is an error message that says "CMOS checksum error" and "F1 to load
Defaults" when I hit F1 windows will finally load.

Any idea of what steps to take to correct this?  Do I need to reload windows?
 And if I reload windows, what will happen to all the data currently on my
HD?  Or am I looking at a hardware device malfunction?

I have an older AMD computer, not sure what processor it is running and have
56 k memory.
