I had some success using Iolo Search and Recover (Iolo.com) to retrieve 
hundreds of photos from a bad xd camera flash card and more from a bad 
sd card.  The 'deep scan' option seemed to work best.  I didn't get all 
the files, some were corrupted, but I salvaged probably about 90%.  The 
flash drives do not last forever; it's a good idea to back them up 
occasionally to a cd or a hard drive.  My first step would be to try to 
copy the entire flash card to a pc, then try to do the recovery from 
there first.  If that fails, then try to read the card directly with a 
file recovery product.
