I had that exact problem recently on a perfectly working system
by JUST adding, changing and seating the RAM wrong( ?-! )...
It looked and felt right, but re-seating the SAME RAM cured the problem...
Sometimes mysterious thinks happen...
Always re-checked the basics (twice) before moving on to the harder stuff...

OTOH, I have one machine that uses an LCD monitor.
Sometimes the machine looks VERY dead while it posts and counts
LOTS of RAM... If I hit ESC, it cancels the RAM count and
the LCD monitor comes "alive" with the BIOS (USER) password screen.
The computer works perfect after that...

PC A is acting up and doesn't want to play. I switch on and the fan runs
but the red button by the 'on' switch stays on and the monitor stays black
although the power light on that is on.
