Have you gone to "safe mode" and removed anything that doesn't apply to the new system. If you haven't done this-- there should be -some  useless stuff that needs to be removed.

Also re-do a "SCANREG /FIX" from a dos prompt--to try to clean any old info from the registry.

Lastly, you may have to install Win 98 over itself.  If none of this works then you will have to FDISK and FORMAT and start anew which in my opinion is the best way to go. You can waste a lot of time try to repain windows.

By the way--I assume that you have reinstalled the sound card and its setup. ---Mike Michel
