Thanks for the link and information. I have loaded the hplip which is a newer version than I have. It loads and leaves a locked folder on the desktop, although it doesn't show up in the synaptic package manager. During install a wizard started, but couldn't detect the network printer, so I installed it locally. After the configuration, I tried to detect the network printer again, I can't find it this time. Before it was listed under windows(SMB). Not really an expert, but will keep plinking away trying to understand this OS. Thanks.

George, the easiest way to get your printer working with Ubuntu (or
pretty much any version of Linux) is to use HPLIP, downloadable from
http://hplip.sourceforge.net. HP developed the software and it supports
a zillion of their printers (more or less). It's not included with most
Linux distributions because it is not covered by the GPL (some parts use
the MIT license and some use the BSD license).

Good luck!
