It depends on the Model.   The 500 I could press the ink refill button and they would move off so I could put the windex in.  On the 600 I had to start the printer with the lid up and when the carrier assembly moved to the left, I had to pull the plug.  Maybe someone else knows a better solution, but if I didn't pull the plug, the assembly came back and made me cuss when I made a mess.   HTH
