Hi,
I've also had that problem on occasion. In my case, I traced it down to not
having the monitor powered on while windows booted up. Most new monitors have
two way communications with the video card, so when windoes boots up, it
checks to see if the same monitor is still connected to the video card. If it
gets no response from the monitor (because it's not powered up), then it
assumes it's been changed, and loads settings for a default monitor, which
can have a different refresh rate at your selected resolution. Many monitors
will have a different display width at the "new" refresh rate, which is what
I think you may be experiencing. The same thing could happen if the monitor
was powered on, but for some reason did not reply back to windows when
queried.
A quick way to check is to see what the monitor type is set to when the
display changes width (Display Properties>Settings Tab>Advanced Button>
Monitor Tab).

HTH,
Peter Hogan
