Just to clarify: The "display type" is the VIDEO CARD, not the
monitor.
[Under Win98, I do not see "Change display type"; from Settings, I
have to click the "Advanced" button and then select the "Adapter" tab
to get to the "Change..." button.... There *is* also a "Change..."
button on the "Monitor" tab, but "Monochrome VGA" is about the only
setting there that should affect the available colour depths, and it
will curtail them rather than improve them.]

  16 colors means either:

1. You've selected a resolution very near the maximum that can be
supported by the installed video RAM -- you could probably have more
colors at this resolution if you added RAM to the video card, or
replaced it.

2. Your video card works as a vanilla VGA, but not as anything better.
This could be due to a mismatch between driver and card; try
(re)installing the driver.
