If you're running W98, you could use 'scanreg /restore' in DOS to select
another registry cabfile (which will restore your entire registry by using a
copy which is hopefully, undamaged)
To get to DOS, use a boot disk, or keep hitting the F8 key as the pc boots
up, then select 'Command Prompt Only' from the menu you get.
Try getting 'Scanreg' to kick in from C:\Windows but if not,
C:\Windows\Command should yield it.

possibly be, so how could I choose the right driver?

matter what I do I end up in the same place with the same error message.
