Hi John,

It is not odd that the clock is correct when you reboot the machine. This
is because when the PC is running, there are two separate clocks keeping
track of the current time. One is the hardware clock powered by the lithium
battery, the other is a software clock that is kept by Windows and updated
periodically. Your information indicates that the battery backed clock is
correct, so the problem sounds like it COULD be software related. Windows
reads the battery backed clock once upon bootup, then it keeps its own
count based on a hardware interrupt.

Among the possible causes is excessive interrupts from other parts of the
hardware, or software (usually drivers) that disable interrupts for too
long. One possibility is if you play lots of audio. See the following
Microsoft KB article.

It is also possible that the hardware timer interrupt to the processor is
slower than it should be. This would be a problem on the motherboard, but
if this problem just started recently, it is unlikely. You might review any
changes you have made to the system recently, including new hardware,
drivers, or software.
