It may not be necessary to do a low level reformat.  You should try
rewriting the master boot record (MBR) or restoring it using Segates
software.  I had a problem when I installed Win95 OSR2 that I couldn't get
the disk to boot and would get a non-system disk error.  If I went in and
restored the MBR then it would boot up just fine.  Sometimes you can get a
virus that will alter the MBR (a boot sector virus) but I think the name of
the virus I had was win.exe.  Try restoring the MBR before doing a low
level format and you may save yourself an hour or so.

Hi,
   Have you tried a mid-level format?  Seagate has a program at
http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/drivers/discfile.shtml that
will do this.  You will need to know the cylinders, heads, and
sectors of the drive.  You can also do a low level verify of the
drive.  This program writes 0's (I think) to every spot.  If it
is not a media problem, this should fix it.  I have had problems
with drives before that this was the only way to fix.
