I admit to being confused about this subject myself, but this article
may help:

I had a nearly identical problem with my AMD 64 Asus board, except that
it wouldn't boot at all when I added the 2d GB of DDR400.
ASUS support had me lower the frequency to 333MHz, which solved the
problem. This may have worked with your BIOS as well, if the option was
present.
Your present configuration seems to mean that you're not getting max
performance out of your memory, but the difference may be trivial.
More memory is good-if your system works OK with the additional memory,
leave it in.
I'm sure there are others who can supply a more informative answer.
