Maybe it's also driver related with myself then? Would that have been why a
new mouse fixed the problem? (The (old?) mouse is fine on a different system
as far as I can tell)
When the mouse was changed, would new drivers have been loaded?
(I will try to remember all these things for the future also)

Many thanks to all who responded to my query.
As several people suggested, it turned out to be driver-related. I opened
Device Manager and removed the mouse then rebooted, which fixed the problem.
Howard Rubin's idea about a sticking shift key was a good one though, I must
remember it for future reference.
