Hello all,

I have just purchased an add-in 9-pin serial, 8-bit, half-size ISA
card...nothing fancy just something to accomplish the task at hand (I
hope!!) What I am attepmting to do is add this card to my system in
order to provide a COM3 so that I can attach my Apple eMate 300 to my
computer at any time without rebooting in order to transfer files.
However, I am somewhat bewildered as to why the card does not seem to be
working. I am running an ASUS HX chipset motherboard with a Pentium 200
MMX, with all of my devices running off from an Adaptec AHA-2940. I am
also running an ATI 3D Pro Turbo + PC2TV (PCI) and a Sound Blaster AWE64
Gold (ISA). I give this information for some clues as to the possible
IRQ's & I/O ranges that are already in use by the system. Initially I
configured the card for COM3, I/O 3E8 & IRQ 4. Currently I use my COM1,
set to 3F8H/IRQ 4 for my mouse & my COM2, 2F8H/IRQ 3, for my external
modem.

When I booted into NT 4.0 w/SP4, I went into the control panel, opened
up Ports & added COM3 with the I/0 & IRQ settings I listed earlier. NT
told me I needed to reboot, so I did so. The only weird thing I noticed
in the COM ports section was although, COM2, where my modem resides was
listed, COM1, for my mouse was not listed. But my mouse is working
fine, so I just left that alone. But when I rebooted my computer &
opened the application for transfering files with my eMate, it did not
recognize COM3. I was not certain if the problem was with the
configuration of the COM port on the card, in NT, or if the application
will just not recognize the additional COM port. However, I am
uncertain how to test the system to see if the COM port is really
working. I am familiar with Windows 95's Control Panel where you can
make sure there are no conflicts/problems with the device, but I do not
know where to look for this same information in NT. So, the only guess
I had was that COM3 was having an IRQ conflict with COM1, since both
were set to IRQ4, so I switched the card to IRQ 5 & then changed the
setting in NT. Again, though, the application did not recognize the
serial card.

So, I was wondering if some NT guru out there might be able to provide
me with a little more information on how to make sure that the card is
configured and working properly in terms of I/O's, IRQ's, and making
sure NT recognizes it. The only thing that makes me wonder is after I
reconfigured NT each time with the card in the system, I never received
an error message about an event or device not being able to startup
after rebooting, which makes me think the card is working fine and it is
only the application that can not see it.
