Begob I did! and it did!

But in fact the drivers which I had downloaded from the Hayes site were not
the right ones. But after trying both of them, and having the modem work
with neither, I'm back to "standard 33.6 modem", which works at least. The
annoying "have detected new hardware" message was gone this morning, so
maybe I'm rid of it, which is all I wanted really - though I have had
continual problems with my line dropping, which may be related to the wrong
modem script. Or not, as the case may be: I had the same problems on the
Mac, and with a Winmodem which I briefly flirted with.
