Peter,
     I wouldn't think this is likely, but maybe both IDE channels on
the board died at once?  I have had one fail and the other keep going.
 (think HD IDE dies so have to chain both HD and CD drive on same
cable)  Did you have any power surge problems recently?  When you were
working with the cables did you take another known good IDE cable and
try it in the Celeron system that you are having problems with?  It
could be a cable too, I am just not real clear about what type of
cable swap you did.  (maybe you just switched from one to another
already in the case?)
