I haven't come across your problem before, but unless your burner is under warranty I wouldn't bother with it. I agree with Mark's recommendations. I currently use a LiteOn and it works great.

  Subject: [PCBUILD] DVDRW recommendation

I have been using a BTC IDE1004IM DVDRW drive for a few years. It worked
well, but recently it started having some problems reading DVDs. Yesterday,
it had the odd behavior of producing a choppy audio and video in somewhat
slow motion. I checked out my drivers and player software and all seemed
well. Last time I had problems, they were fixed with a firmware upgrade.
Since the drive HAD BEEN working ok before, I knew that a firmware upgrade
may not be the solution, but since a newer firmware was available, I decided
  to give it a try.
During the firmware upgrade, my Windows XP system crashed with a blue
screen. Since the firmware did not get written back in, the drive no longer
  works.

Three questions that I have for the list:

  1. Has anyone else experienced a failure where the audio is choppy and video
  running slow?

  2. I contacted the manufacturer already, but has anyone had luck replacing
the firmware in such a situation?

  3. Most important - a recommendation for a new DVDRW drive?

  Thank you,

  Peter
