I notice that you have not received a reply to your post so I'll give it 
a try. Depending on the optical drive(s), what your friend is 
encountering may be normal. If you check the specifications on each 
drive, you may find that the drive that works with all the CD's may be 
able to read a wider range of CD's than the other drive that may be 
limited to only certain types of CD's. The primary difference to look 
for is between CD+R and CD-R and between CDRW and non CDRW.

As an added  comment, your friend should consider increasing the RAM to 
at least 1GB from the 512MB. It will increase performance with XP.
