I  gave up on paper labels long ago.
there are special markers for cds, I saw some at staples not long ago.
I just use a regular sharpie marker and it doesn't seem to hurt anything.
there are printable cd/dvd-recordables that can be printed on with a special
printer,
like the Epson Stylus Photo R300
