By jove, I think I've got it! I restored the original system configuration
in the BIOS and it appears that did the trick. But while in the BIOS, I did
have to change the operating system to "Other" from "Win ME/2000" because
until I did that I had no sound (sound card was undetected, according to
device manager). It follows that the technical problem is related to some
sort of sound card/driver conflict, but the real culprit is HP, which should
have sent across some sort of BIOS update for this model, which they never
did. Heck, I chatted online with three of HP's tech-support people who
couldn't help me. My computer was loaded originally with ME. Not enough
people had ME long enough to mess with it, I guess. At least the last two
times I've shut down Windows this afternoon, computer has shut down as it
should and the sound still comes back OK. Thanks so much for your help.

I run WinXP. About a month ago, I noticed that my speakers started =
popping after I shut my comp down. A week or so later, I noticed that I =
still heard noise from my comp after it seemed to shut down correctly. I =
opened it up, and the fans are still running, and the power light is =
flickering. The only way to get the fans off is to cut the electricity =
or use the switch at the back of the comp. =20
I don't know if this is what your problem is, it sounds like it could =
be. I replaced the power supply and I have never had anymore problems. =

Thanks for your input. Are you talking about replacing the power supply
inside the computer? All I see is the AC cord and the monitor cable.
