You suggested handing down computers from child to child, but keeping
hard drives with the present child.

Consider having everyone make their own backup.  This will preserve their
favorite programs.  Then, starting at the low end (486), shift systems
from person to person, delete as necessary to make space, and restore the
data to the newer system.

If they don't have recent backups, this will be good insurance against
future problems - and good practice!
