For memory / RAM purchases, all of the major manufacturers of RAM have 
compatibility tools on their websites. Some vendors do this as well.

Other items (CPU, hard drives, DVD drives, etc) either require specific 
knowledge about the motherboard involved (for CPUs) or are easy upgrades 
that don't require more then a cursory check.

And if you're upgrading the motherboard, CPU, and RAM all at once, there 
are vendors out there who will sell you a motherboard bundle. You can 
have them do the assembly and testing and you'll know that you're 
getting CPU / RAM / MB that all works together properly. Usually this 
is done by picking the CPU that you want then picking compatible 
motherboards and RAM from a list.
