Well, you would know it if you have battery backup, and indeed my question 
was irrelevant.

I have to believe that the battery is the CMOS battery. And, since your 
computer clearly has power, that battery clearly has no direct impact on 
computer performance as it is merely to maintain "memory" when the computer 
is off. If the battery was completely run down, people on this list could 
tell you exactly what problems that could cause, although I believe failure 
to boot is one of the symptoms. Maybe you could replace the battery and see 
what happens? (Although that might be like closing the barn door after the 
horse is gone.

It was my father's PC, so no, I don't think so.  I've been tinkering with 
PCs for several years now, but this is something totally new.  I've never 
seen this before.  It wouldn't boot at all with a boot disk or the boot cd I 
have.
