In case anyone else was interested, I responded to Jim in a separate e-mail
with the Win98 himem.sys file attached (I assumed he didn't have access to
Win98). I said:
"Copy the attached file to the Win98 boot disk, then use a text editor to
modify the floppy's config.sys file, or create one if it doesn't exist, and
add this line (without the quotes) "device=himem.sys /testmem:off"."
I should also note that early Win95 may have problems with large hard drives
and or partitions over 2GB as it does not support FAT32, and Win95b won't
support a drive or partition over 32GB using FAT32. It's been a long time
since I used it and don't quite recall the details.

I am trying to install Windows 95 on a new hard drive. I used a PC Tech
Windows 98 boot disk to set it up. Everything went as expected until I
inserted the Windows 95 disk and typed in setup.
I then got the following message:-
"Scandisk is unable to check a drive because there is no extended memory
driver loaded on your computer.
To check this drive, make sure that you have a HIMEN.SYS file on the disk
from which you are starting your computer, and then restart using the
"Command prompt only" option (not "safe mode, command prompt only").
Depending on the location of the HIMEN.SYS file, you may need to add a line
such as DEVICE=A:\HIMEN.SYS or DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEN.SYS in the
CONFIG.SYS file on your boot drive."
I would appreciate assistance on how to do what the message says.
The drive was partitioned using FDISK and the c drive was formatted (format
c:/s) to place the system files on the drive. The CD-ROM was loaded using
the Win 98 disk.
I tried installing Win 95 from the CD-ROM and got the results mentioned
above.
I also loaded Win 95 CAB files on C drive and tried installing from there,
but I got the same results.
The new hard drive is mounted on a computer with a Romtec hard drive switch.
There are two other hard drives on this computer and they work fine. One of
them is identical to the new one (Western Digital, 80GB, EIDE, 8MB Cache).
My system is a Pentium 4, 2.0GHz, 512MB.
