usb port locks up computer

I have a Gateway D2685 running windows xp home. Whenever I put a flash drive into a usb port it locks up the computer. This does not happen when I put it into other computers. When I plug my mouse into these same ports it does not lock up the computer but the mouse does not function. What gives?
