Hi:

Probably would be safe, but to ensure it, you could always unplug the power
and data cable to the drive until your upgrage reinstall is all done.

The gotcha is that, if your D drive is a slave you may have to move jumpers
on C depending on brand of C drive, and make changes the BIOS.  A little
more work but would ensure safety of the data during reinstall.

Then you would reverse what you did to put it back as D
