I have a ProStar laptop from Jan. 1998. It uses a desktop CPU. The fans
on this unit runs all the time. Over the years the fans has tried to
quit. I have repaired the fans at least twice. I figure new fans will
just do the same thing as they get old so I might as well lean how to do
fan maintenance once every two years until I get rid of the laptop. I
would try to find out for sure if your fan is temperature controlled or
is meant to run all the time. The cause of your shut downs could be
cause by the fan not being on when it is needed. Check for dust on the
cpu fins. After three years of mine running almost all the time there
was a lot of dust on the fins.

I thought it might be a heat problem so I raised it an inch or so off the desk so it could get more air flow. The fan intake is on the bottom of the case and only has about 1/4 inch of space when sitting normally on my desk hooked to the docking station. The fan runs intermittently. I think this is normal for a laptop...
